Montana was our very first American Master Hunter title holder.
She was born on May 12, 2000, and was liver in color with a small amount of white on her chest. She was 24 inches at the shoulder and weighed approximately 55 pounds. Montana was the daughter of Shelby and Wildwing.
Montana was registered with both the Canadian and American Kennel Clubs. She finished her Canadian Show Title (CH) on February 17, 2002. Some of her wins included Best of Breed, over Specials, and Best Puppy. Montana also earned her Canine Good Citizen title (CGC) on November 10, 2001 and her Companion Dog Title (CD), on October 26, 2002. Montana had 11 points towards her American Show Champion Title and needed one major to finish.
She was a beautiful working bird dog. She completed her Canadian Field Dog title (FD) with four qualifiers in back-to-back weekends in June 2004. She was #3 Field Dog in Canada in 2004. She finished her American Master Hunter title in October 2010 after she had already completed her American Senior Hunter title with five qualifiers.
Montana was a very willing, calm young dog, and she loved children. She was a very strong swimmer and would putter at the lake all day if we let her. Her temperament was excellent.
Montana excelled at hunting, was steady to command, and showed desire and intensity on point. She retrieved to hand both on land and from water. She had the attention of many judges, pro handlers, gunners and steadfast hunters when she hunted. She was simply every hunter’s dream to watch when she worked birds.
Conformationally, she exhibited all the outstanding characteristics of a Shorthair. She had good bone, depth of chest, broad head, short back, angulation and muscle. Although she was a liver, she produced some ticked pups as well as livers.
In the spring of 2005, we bred her to Griffin (DC. Kist Mi’s Impressive Griffin MH. Griffin). He had completed his Am. Field Champion, and with this completed became a Dual Champion. Their pups went on to earn many field, show and obedience titles.
Montana was also bred to Luke (VC. Luke Von Burkhart MH, UT-1, NA-1). That was her last litter, born in 2010. Those pups are now in the field, show and obedience ring – following in their parents’ footsteps as they turn into amazing GSPs.
Montana eventually retired from motherhood and enjoyed lazy days at the lake and cool days in front of the fireplace. She loved teaching the youngsters how to hunt. She passed away quietly in our home and will forever hold a very special place in our hearts.
