Fogelhund is a small, family-run kennel deeply committed to preserving and enhancing the traditional traits of the German Shorthaired Pointer breed. Our dogs are wonderful family members and are truly versatile, bred to perform well in the field, in obedience trials and in the show ring. We called our kennel Fogelhund because it means ‘bird dog’ in German, a testament to our profound appreciation for this versatile 200-year-old working breed.
Our puppies are top-quality sporting dogs produced from proven, working, healthy stock. We reinforce their natural abilities with early introductions to the great outdoors, both on our rural acreage north of Toronto and at our lakeside cottage in Muskoka. Whelped and raised in our family home, our pups are well-socialized with exceptional temperaments, always striving to please.
We are registered with the Canadian Kennel Club and the American Kennel Club, and remain active with many German Shorthair Clubs both in Canada and the United States. Fogelhund has been recognized by the Purina Pro Club through their Purina Breeder Referral Service, for meeting the highest standards of breeding excellence. We are always available to help families that take our puppies home.
Our Philosophy
Fogelhund is a German Shorthaired Pointer breeder that practices a controlled, ethical breeding program. We are responsible breeders who produce a limited number of puppies each year. Our litters are typically reserved before the breeding takes place.
We are Breeder/Owner-Handlers. In other words, we breed, whelp, raise, train and show our own dogs – and we love to work with our puppies and their families.
We have worked diligently at producing our own conformationally correct German Shorthaired Pointer line. Fogelhund shorthairs are big-boned with a broad head and muzzle, good depth of chest, strong rears and proper angulation. Eyes are clear with rich, dark pigment.
Our breeding stock is hip-checked and clear of hereditary disablement, so our dogs are structurally sound, healthy, and capable of handling any task. We guarantee our puppies.
Our puppies are part of our family, and so we take great care in selecting their forever homes. We carefully match our puppies and their personalities to the needs and preferences of their new family.
