About German Shorthaired Pointers
German Shorthairs are highly intelligent and very active dogs that were bred for work more than 200 years ago. They love to run, swim and play, and they require lots of daily exercise – we recommend at least an hour of off-leash time daily. Fogelhund shorthairs are smart, quick learners with a very keen nose and natural hunting abilities. They are incredibly loyal, make excellent family members and absolutely love children. They are good watchdogs, but not aggressive – their tails are always wagging. They have a very short coat, which requires little grooming but also means the dog must be protected in extreme cold or hot sun. For all of these reasons, we recommended that our GSPs be raised as house pets.
Why choose a Fogelhund German Shorthaired Pointer Puppy?
At Fogelhund, we offer only the highest quality German Shorthaired Pointer puppies for sale. First and foremost, they are wonderful family members. Our line is also a true sporting line, bred to perform. Our dogs can hunt and swim and excel in all variations of obedience and show. They are truly a breed apart from all others – they’re a go-anywhere, do-everything kind of dog. Here are some reasons we think you’ll love a Fogelhund puppy!
Fogelhund puppies come from working, proven, titled breeding stock that are hip checked and clear of hereditary diseases. We provide a five-generation pedigree with each puppy. With exceptional genetics, our puppies have an abundance of natural ability, which makes training much easier and enjoyable. Fogelhund puppies can tackle show, field and any variation of obedience. They are remarkable hunters and swimmers.
As a potential buyer, you will find there are many German Shorthaired Pointer puppies for sale in Canada and the United States. At Fogelhund, we encourage you to purchase a puppy that truly matches your needs. If you wish to hunt, for example, you will want to ensure that your GSP comes from a working line. Many breeders have bred hunting and swimming out of their stock, and every generation without a working line means the skills will be that much harder to teach. Be diligent in your search, and be willing to wait to get the puppy you want.
Conformationally correct and in excellent health
We guarantee the health of our dogs. Our breeding stock has been x-rayed for hip dysplasia and confirmed clear; they have also been temperament-tested to ensure they are sound. Fogelhund puppies receive vaccinations and a complete health check by a certified veterinarian, and we guarantee they are healthy and clear of any congenital defects.
The pups are wormed every two weeks from two weeks of age until they go home. They are microchipped and/or are given a tattoo in their right ear, which is registered with the Canadian Kennel Club. This identifies the dog as purebred, and is traceable if the need arises. Their tails are docked, as a requirement of the breed standard, and dewclaws are removed to prevent injuries while the dog is working. We send them home with a collar, a starter kit from Purina ProPlan, complete veterinary records, full pedigree, a health guarantee and a Puppy Purchase Agreement, which states that we cover against any hereditary defects. Roughly three months after you take your puppy home, you’ll receive his or her registration papers at no extra cost.
Raised with care and attention
Fogelhund puppies are raised in our home, with plenty of love and attention. We are able to spend lots of quality time with every puppy because we have just one or two litters every year. As a result, Fogelhund puppies are very well socialized before they go to their forever homes. We introduce them to the great outdoors. Many have even splashed, played and learned to swim with their mother in the lake at our Muskoka cottage. Fogelhund puppies tend to be very outgoing and confident, each with his or her own unique personality.
We encourage our puppy buyers to stay in touch. We are always available to answer questions and assist with training and other issues. From time to time, families who have purchased our puppies share news, photos and videos, and we share them right here on our blog!
Application and Interview
At Fogelhund, we take great care in selecting forever homes for our puppies. Our puppies are sold by reservation to approved homes only. Those who wish to purchase a puppy must fully complete and return our Puppy Purchase Agreement, take part in an one-on-one interview with us, and sign our Puppy Purchase Agreement.
Shorthair owners are typically active people who enjoy the great outdoors and think of their GSP as one of the family. Purchasing a GSP requires that you sincerely evaluate your lifestyle: How much spare time do you have? How much space do you have to house and exercise an active dog? How much time are you willing to invest? What is your activity level? Are you able to commit the next eight to 15 years to a pet that totally depends on you? Our application will help you to work through some of these questions.
Pricing and Payment
If you successfully complete the application process and decide to purchase a puppy from us, we require a $400 non-refundable deposit to hold a pup for you. This $400 deposit counts toward the purchase price of your puppy.
Your deposit is your guarantee to us that you are committed to the purchase and ownership of a Fogelhund puppy. Similarly, our acceptance of your deposit is our commitment to provide you with a quality GSP to meet your needs, from our next available litter (or specified litter at later dates).
German Shorthaired Pointers come in a variety of colours and markings and we are not able to control what a litter will produce. While every effort is made to provide you with the preferred sex and colouring of puppy that you have specified in your application, we do not guarantee sex and colouring. As long as there is a puppy available to you, your deposit will not be refunded.
In the event that we are not able to provide you with a puppy by the specified time, either because a litter was not conceived or because there were not enough puppies available in the litter, you can move onto the list for our next litter or have your deposit refunded.
